What is Grand Market Day about?

The Christmas Market, also known as Jamaican Grand Market Day, takes place on Christmas Eve and is an exciting event. Rather than buying and wrapping Christmas gifts for children to place under the tree, the tradition is for parents to dress their children in their best new clothes and take them to the town square with their families. At the market, children can purchase their own toys, as many vendors sell toys from various countries, making it a magical experience for kids. The day is also filled with fun activities such as bounce houses, cotton candy, games, music, and dance, creating an atmosphere of joy and laughter. Grand Market is the highlight of every child's Christmas holiday, offering a full day of excitement and lasting memories.

This cultural tradition is said to date back to the era of slavery. It is said that enslaved people were given a few days off around, and on one of these days, they would dress up and gather to socialize. Some sold handmade items such as straw hats and baskets, some sang, and played drums. This was a rare opportunity for them to come together, find joy, and share moments of connection amidst their immense struggles.
